DPIRD – Protecting WA’s Backyard

This week is NAIDOC week, and we are celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme is “Voice. Treaty. Truth”.

Aboriginal people have an exceptional connection to the land, and bring with them unique understandings, skills and innovations to our agricultural fields. Our Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) program seeks to nurture this by helping to provide jobs and opportunities through our primary industries, and strategic regional projects.

Yallalie Downs, in Dandaragan is owned by Beemura Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) and is the first Aboriginal cattle backgrounding business in WA. The farm is managed by two young Aboriginal women, Lexine and Madeline known as the ‘power duo’.

Lexi and Madeline have embraced the day to day responsibilities of running the farm which includes managing accounts, livestock and pastures. Our work with BAC over the last four years has enabled Yallalie Downs to become an established and profitable business.
